A Goal Without A Plan Is A Wish
This is the official site of Hugh McPherson's presentation of the same name scheduled for the 2010 NAFDMA Convention. The purpose of this blog/informational site is to allow session attendees to maximize the session's value by participating before the session. Why? Don't you just hate it when sessions don't speak to you? Sure, Hugh's got loads of information to share with you, but wouldn't it be nice if the examples really meant something to you and your business? Start adding your comments and suggestions to this site to feed Hugh the information important to you.
Homework question #1: What are you worth?
What am I worth (per hour)? Total Revenue ÷ Total Hours = My Value Created Per Hour _________ ÷ ___________ = $ Per Hour I chose this calculation, not because this is your take-home pay, but because it is for what you are responsible. If you, as a business owner, don't do what you need to do, there is no revenue. If you are a manager, put in the gross revenue of your sector of the business. How do you feel about this measurement of business worth? Please note that we are not trying to define the inherent worth of individuals in a philosophical manner. We're talking your time-value in the business.
Homework question #2: What task or goal do I really want to acheive this year?
Define what you really want. Many times we want things to get better, but we can't quite put our finger on what would make 'better' happen. So take a minute and write out what you really want. Be Specific.
Homework question #3: What do you do when you are procrastinating?
It's easy to stay busy. However, motion should not be confused with action. Try to think of those 'things that come up' right when you are about to take action on an important task or project. Do you check email? Does the phone ring? Do you suddenly feel the urge to have a snack? Does your employee communication radio crackle? Does your favorite song come on the radio? Do you remember that vacuuming you need to get done? Procrastination is insidious. It disguises itself as work, fun, relaxation, or crisis. The most common form of procrastination in my experience working with farmers is "Firefighting." Not the local volunteer kind, but the management kind. So often we say, "I'm so busy putting out fires I can't get anything done!" Believe it or not, that is a form of procrastination. Subconsciously we know that if we stay busy enough we won't have to face the work, challenges, and potential failure of working on our true goals. So, what's holding you back?
Homework question #4: What weekly/monthly tasks do you hate the most?
We gravitate towards tasks we like. I hate accounting, so I hired a bookkeeper to do the daily, weekly, and monthly tasks because if I had to I would procrastinate and be inefficient. Annually, I plan ahead to chip away at the tax related, year-end tasks one afternoon a week throughout February so I never face three solid days of accounting nightmares on the deadline. What tasks do you hate? How can you delegate them, hire them out, or minimize the time you spend on them? Think of the freedom of mind and time you would have if you didn't have to dread these hated tasks.
Homework question #5: What do you want from this session?
NAFDMA is full of information, but you can only use what applies to you. I'm going to all this trouble to blog about my session specifically to make sure you get what you need from it. I HATE sessions that don't apply to me. I bet you do too! So, give me some feedback on what you would like from a session on goals and planning - EVEN IF you can't make it to NAFDMA. We'll be recording the session and posting it here so you can see it, second hand at least, but there's nothing like being in the room. So what do you want from the session? What will help you be more successful in achieving your goals in 2010?
Homework question #6: If Hugh had a magic wand...
...what would he solve for you? This relates to your goals from question #1. You have to know what you want. This is different because you are probably thinking about a very broad topic such as "grant me debt freedom", "fix my family issues", "bring peace to my staff", or "de-stress my life." When asking for wishes, we tend to want a very broad fix for a very painful problem. It's useful to know what you would wish for because it will indicate the region of your life in which you have the most pain. Goals are the second step. If you wished for "debt freedom", a goal would be to increase attendance and profits by "X" amount. Plans are the third step. They are the road map to achieving goals.
Homework question #7: I think a goal is...
You may have your own definition or specific application of the word "goal" and I'd like to know it. Share your definition or application in the comment section below.
Homework question #8: I think a plan is...
You may have your own definition or specific application of the word "plan" and I'd like to know it. Share your definition or application in the comment section below.
